Peddocks Island was identified by Boston Harbor Island Alliance (BHIA) and its government partners as prime real estate for large scale development including multiple uses, such as a corporate retreat with lodge and meeting facilities, a rehabilitated chapel for public programming, a parade ground with event tent and a family eco-camp. The 184- acre island oasis has beautiful hiking trails and spectacular views of Boston Harbor and Boston Light, the oldest lighthouse site in America.
Under the relationship of the Boston Harbor Island Alliance and the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), the first phase of this project, bringing utilities to the island (power, water, communications, and wastewater disposal), was completed in 2002. Using environmental mitigation funds, BHIA along with DCR and the National Park Service, is overseeing the next phase of this development project including the design work to restore three historic buildings on the island: a guardhouse that will host visitor amenities and catering facilities, a Chapel that will provide a unique setting for weddings and private events, a stable, and the parade grounds with an event tent.
